Staying Motivated in 2021

Hello, 2021! We are a few weeks into the new year, and we hope that you’re reaching milestones when it comes to your goals; however, if you’re feeling unmotivated, this is normal. Most people give up on their goals by January 19th but lucky for you, we’ve got your back. Here are 5 ways to stay motivated when your goals get heavy.

Celebrate You

When you learned about positive reinforcement in your 10th-grade psychology class, you probably never expected to use it on yourself. When you’ve made a step towards completing your goals, tell your friends, post about it on social media, take yourself out for ice cream. It’s important to recognize your accomplishment, admire your hard work, and reward yourself.

Track Your Progress

Have you ever heard the phrase “one day at a time”?  Apply this to your goals! Spending too much time focusing on the outcome can be overwhelming and can result in a lack of motivation. When you’re feeling unmotivated, look at your long-term goals and break them into small milestones. Progress is progress, no matter how big or small it may be.

Stop Procrastinating!

The 5 Second Rule was invented by Mel Robbins. It is a way to eliminate procrastination in your life. When you have thoughts about doing an action towards meeting your goals, you must physically act within 5 seconds. For example, when your alarm clock goes off 30 minutes early because you planned on going for a morning walk, you have 5 seconds to get out of bed before your brain will talk you out of it.

Find an Accountability Partner

This can be a classmate who is working towards similar goals, a coach who wants to see you succeed, or a friend you can count on. Express your goals to them in detail and ask them to check in on you, push you, and hold you accountable for reaching milestones within your goal.

Visualize

Visualize a future where your goals have been achieved. Ask yourself what your life will look like, write it down, and revisit it often. You can make a vision board by creating a collage of images that represent your goals and your future once you’ve accomplished them. Make this collage the background of your phone or laptop so you constantly see it and are reminded of your goals.
